We are getting swamped right now with rodent and flea pest control calls due to the extreme rainfall this summer and cold winter now. The rodents are trying to get in anyway they can and if your home has even one dime size hole they are going to enter and begin to breed. The best thing you can do is walk around and look for any openings that need to be blocked and make note of them until a later point. Then call a local pest control company to come out and use professional rodent bait to bait the attic and crawl space. The reason for waiting on the blocking is you want all rodents that are in the house to hopefully go outside and perish. They normally will due to the nature of our baits and the active ingredients in the bait. With most pest companies they will warranty the job for up to 90 days which should be enough time to rid you of your unwanted house guest. Rodents chewing on wires are a major cause of home fires not to mention the nasty disease ridden droppings they leave behind in your food stuff. Now on the subject of fleas! Most people do not even realize they have a problem until they take their beloved pet Fido to the vet and they tell you about them and try to charge you $50.00 to give him a bath. Also people come home from a extended vacation only to be swarmed on by blood sucking fleas because while away they had no host to live on. The flea pest control treatment is probably the hardest pest for a homeowner to kill themselves due to their 4 life stage cycle. The pest control products you by from the local store are 99.999% nothing and last as long as it takes you to spray them and then they dissipate into harmless oils that stain your floors if you do not carefully read the label. Like all pesticides the label is the law and there is a good reason for them. If not used correctly you can harm yourself or your pet. This is the reason you most definitely want a pro doing the job. What you can do to greatly enhance the treatment you will be receiving is to do a few simple things. First vacuum all rugs with the beater brush as low as possible to suck up as many adults as you can. You also want to flip over throw rugs so the pest guy can spray the underside and top. Be sure to remove couch cushions and throw away the vacuum bag. Next you want to wash all floors and pick up any small items such as shoes, dog and cat dishes. On the outside we always recommend mowing the lawn and trimming bushes. With all this complete your home is ready and the results will be good. If your pest company does not recommend doing any of these things then you may want to shop around for one that will. The biggest reason for call backs with flea treatments is that the homeowner did not prepare and did not treat the animals before or during the treatment. You always have to give it at minimum 3-4 weeks for the best results. After the first week or so you will think wow! this worked great and then around the 3-4th week they come back! This is totally normal and this second wave should not be as bad and should only last about 2 weeks. After the cycles go through the product and hopefully the pest company used a growth regulator with his mix the dreaded fleas will be gone.
