Hello fall and rodent season around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The upcoming colder months are perfect conditions for rodents like mice and rats to enter your home. As local DFW pest control professionals we do receive a lot of new calls about people hearing scratching and scraping in their walls. With cold weather and open gaps is a recipe for a rodent problem. The best thing you can do as a homeowner is go around your home with a caulking gun and steel wool to seal up any cracks and holes that are bigger than a dime. It does not take much for the rats and mice to get in. They are coming in for a few things like food, shelter and water. After you do your blocking be sure to keep dog and cat food in a secure bucket. Keep all other foods locked up tight and don’t leave food scraps laying around. With water fix any leaking pipes and check under your refrigerator drip pan to make sure there is no standing water. You do not want to make it any easier for these sneaky critters. If all these steps are done you can greatly reduce the possibility of a rodent problem. But if you still here scratching or are seeing mice or rats running around your home you may need a professional pest control company at this point. This is where we might be of assistance to you! Hello again from A.N.T.T.S = A North Texas Termite Specialist located in North Richland hills, TX serving the Dallas and Fort Worth area for all termite and pest control problems. We do specialize in termite inspections and treatments but pest control is really our biggest service. We have had a huge increase in bed bug calls lately from nervous home owners who have been reading and watching the news. I would say Bed Bugs are back but really they have never went away totally. We have been doing bed bug inspections and treatments for years and can tell you they can be tough little buggers to kill. You can try to take care of them on your own but in most cases we see people spending almost as much on store bought pest control products as they would if they hired a professional pest control company. It all starts with a good inspection as in most cases with pest service. We go in with our very expensive new flash lights that are bright enough to blind a person and we thoroughly inspect all cracks and crevices and around all bedding especially the headboard. They are lazy little bed bugs and like to take the shortest route to your blood so will most likely be found close to where your body lays. We look at sheets for blood smears and dead cast from bed bugs the come up with a treatment plan. Most plans include a good cleaning of linens and clothes in the general infested area. We also vacuum around headboard and baseboards to help take down the active numbers to help increase our chances of total control. We do not think its a good idea to just spot treat a home for bed bugs although can work on new infestations so long as it has not had time to get out of hand. we like to treat the entire home with a residual pesticide along with a IGR (insect growth regulator) to help with reproduction. Dust seem to work goodl as well as liquids. Our biggest suggestion to the Dallas/Fort Worth residents about the bed bug hysteria is not to panic! Do some research about bed bugs and do a little inspection yourself to see with your own eyes whats lurking under your bed ? Save any and all insects in a vile or plastic bag to show your pest company for a better identification. Then price shop! Yes we are saying price shop because you will see that you will be getting prices anywhere from $150.00 tp $2500 and up to treat a home for bed bugs. We are not the cheapest and not the most expensive but we stand by our work and will not stop coming out until they are gone for good and we never charge to come back during the warranty period. Hello once again DFW residence ! It’s that time of the year again when everyone is getting ready to start their big remodeling projects around the home. I always say there are two termite seasons for us pest control companies. First season is the obvious spring termite swarm and the second is the fall remodeling termite season. Around this time is when we start receiving calls like ” I am redoing our bath and found some strange mud inside the walls ?” We hear it all the time! Termites will only show themselves in early spring when they swarm out to start new colonies. But if you are remodeling and get lucky enough to expose them we have a few tips for you. First do not spray anything on them! This can effect what we use and can move them to another area. Secondly take some photos so you can email them to us so we can maybe identify via email. We also recommend you stop any construction until we can come by and investigate to come up with a treatment plan. Now these days termites are not a death sentence to a home! They are very treatable and the product Termidor is very effective for years to come. Hello again from A.N.T.T.S = A North Texas Termite Specialist. We have been a little late in posting due to the rise in homeowner refinances going on in the DFW area. With the bad economy comes tough times for everyone and a quick refinance is a good solution for quick cash and lower payments. Most lenders require a termite inspection during the process which is where we come in. We have been running around the Dallas/Fort Worth area doing a ton of these. The subject of this post is the upcoming termite swarm that will be hitting the DFW area soon. Some termite swarm seasons last months and some only a weekend. The longer they swarm the better for all. You may ask why this would be better for you ? Well if they only swarm 2 days and they are active in your home and you miss the signs of them or they swarm outside or up in your attic and you do not see them they will have a whole year to feast upon your home undetected. The good thing about having a swarm in your home is you know they are there! Now you can get your local pest control guy out to positively identify them and create a treatment plan of action. Now, what are some signs of a termite swarm you may ask ? Well as a termite inspector I can tell you that when we are on the hunt we look low on the outside and high on the inside. Termites (Subterranean) will enter through pipelines and cracks or just tunnel up the side of your foundation and start chewing. When swarm season arrives they will tunnel up to the highest point and start to break through your wall via little pinholes that will have a bit of gritty mud covering it. These pinholes will enlarge over time and turn into what is called a swarm castle. It can almost look like fingers sticking out of your wall. When ready to fly and send out their reproductive swarm they will come out by the thousands and head for light and try to get outside. Sometimes they will fill up a drop ceiling light and never make it out and sometimes they head for a sliding glass door and die on your floor. The areas this will happen are usually around plumbing areas like bathrooms, sinks and water heaters. They will not fly for long so do not dismiss this as a annual bug invasion that happens every spring but they are gone now. They are not gone just because you do not see them anymore, the workers that are totally different in color and wingless are there. The unseen workers are the ones that are eating 24/7 365 days of the year (At least here in the south). Most homes in a high termite prone area will be hit eventually and if left unprotected they can reach any home and do thousands of dollars worth of damage. Just be aware that termites are everywhere and be on the lookout this spring and if you see something that may lead you to believe that you may have termites pick up the phone and call a local licensed pest professional and get a few estimates for treatment if a positive termite report is made. Hello again from A.N.T.T.S = A North Texas Termite Specialist. Just a quick note about the increase in fire ant and rodent calls in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. Do not be alarmed this is quite normal for this time of the year. Every fall and winter when the mercury drops these little critters start to invade your home. You can try you own home pest control but in most cases this is a time to call in a pro. We professional pest control operators have access to long residual products that will insure the protection of your family from these invaders. What we do is concentrate on cracks and pipelines along with any other entry point. We soak these areas and inspect for further openings that need attention. Inside we use a pretty much odorless product that is applied to the baseboards and under sinks to get any insects that may have made it in. After this is just a waiting game. People sometimes think we are Pide Pipers and the bugs will follow us out the door. It does take a few days and sometimes up to 21 days but you should see a big difference in a short time. Hello again from A.N.T.T.S = A North Texas Termite Specialist. When buying a new home in the Dallas area or just about anywhere in the US the mortgage companies usually require a clear WDI report (termite inspection). These inspections have been on the downside lately due to a struggling economy. What we have seen is a rise in refinance termite inspections! The lenders consider them almost like a new home purchase and require a WDI. This is great for us but can be a pain for the homeowner because we still have to write up conducive conditions and obviously we have to write up and active or prior termite and carpenter ant activity found including any other wood destroying insect. This can be a expensive drawback to the refinance procedure. A.N.T.T.S has had a increase in business due to these new changes in our economy and for this we are thankful but our hearts go out to those who are in trouble. What we have done to help ease the pain on some of these termite finds is allow them to pay us for a treatment when they close on the deal. This lets the people who need that refinance money get it quick then worry about payment later. We have done this on quite a few homes here in Dallas / Fort Worth and have not had any problems collecting our money on full termite treatments. We also take into consideration when inspecting a home that someone already lives in is that there are somethings you can just tell them to do while we are there such as trimming foliage, moving wood piles etc. There is no need to tie up a closing when the conducive condition can be easily corrected at the time of the inspection. So we have made a few changes to help people out in these hard times but we always feel it will come back to us in the long run as it always does. At we live by “what goes around comes around). So keep a few of these ideas in your back pocket if you need to have a termite inspection for you refinance and it will save you time and money in these tough times. On a weekly basis A.N.T.T.S www.antts.biz will be performing pest and termite control for area residence and commercial accounts. We will come across every kind of pest problem you can imagine and some you may not. This should be a very interesting blog to come back and visit because we come across some strange things out there.
